Therapy Process

The decision to begin therapy can be a difficult one and ultimately that decision is very individual. Therapy can help with specific symptoms and targeted areas of treatment. It can also be a safe place to develop deeper understanding into yourself and your relationships. Psychotherapy offers a uniquely unbiased space to reflect on and make meaningful changes in your life. Research has found that psychotherapy is effective for most people.
Psychotherapy sessions typically last around 50 minutes and are regularly scheduled once per week, although there can be exceptions to this. An initial session usually focuses on us getting to know each other. In addition to answering any questions you may have, we will discuss your current symptoms and begin to delve into your psychosocial history. With this information, we will work collaboratively to set goals for your treatment.
One of the most important indicators for a successful treatment outcome is the therapeutic alliance, which is basically how a client and therapist behave, connect and engage together. These things can be hard to immediately gauge and therefore we will check in on them in our first couple sessions to see if it’s feeling like a good fit. If it isn’t, there are no hard feelings and I’m happy to provide you with a referral to another therapist.
Your confidentiality in therapy is protected by state law and HIPAA. This means what is discussed in therapy, and the fact that you even are engaged in psychotherapy services, is not something I am able to disclose to others. Privacy is an essential part of developing the safety necessary to engage in productive psychotherapy. Exceptions to confidentiality do exist when there is a threat to yourself or someone else.
I offer in-person sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays at 707 Lake Cook Road in Deerfield. Depending on COVID infection rates, masks may be required to meet in-person. In person sessions can feel more productive to some clients. Others prefer to meet in the office for confidentiality reasons, as variables in some home environments can make it feel less safe to discuss some aspects of their lives. I provide tele-health, or remote sessions, via the SimplePractice app. You can attend your sessions from the privacy of your home, car, office space, etc. The connection is secure and HIPAA compliant.
No, my training and licensure do not allow me to recommend or prescribe medications. I can refer you for evaluation for medication or other treatments.
